Some bikes seem to be forgotten and then decades later become resurrected. The Honda CX500 is just that bike. The CX500 has been called the “Poor Man’s Moto Guzzi” but it has become anything but. As with Moto Guzzi, there is a certain beauty in the engine style. It’s large engine case and distinctive V-twin design has grabbed the attention of many builders. Mr Motorcycle being one of the. The Honda CX500 Cafe Racer has become all the rage among builders in the last few years.
The Honda CX500 come from a unique design background. The engine, unlike any other Honda motorcycle, is the brain child of Shoichiro Irmajiri. Irmajiri, known for designing the Honda CBX, was given ultimate freedom in designing the CX500. The result is pretty cool looking bike and design if you get rid of the ape hanger handlebars and do some modifications to the tank. Mat at Mr Motorcycle, ditched the stock handlebars, went with the Cognito Moto triple clamp and added some clip ons, resulting int he classic cafe racer look.
My favorite goodies on the bike are the controls and gauge which are all Motogadget components. Mat went with the Motogadget M-Blaze barend signals, M-switches for controls and M-grips to keep the riders hands comfy. The gauge is the Motogadget Motoscope Classic which I believe is one of the best units on the market. To keep the bars clean, all the controls are wired to the Motogadget M-Button which feeds into the Motogadget M-Unit to control all the bikes functions. If you have not checked out the M-Unit, I urge you to do so.
Additionally, Mat wasn’t happy with the very large wide stock CX500 tank. The tank was heavy modified and narrowed, yet he retained the oem latch style fuel cap. This gives it that almost stock look. In the rear of the bike, Mat kept the stock sub-frame and rear shock mounts but added a tail hoop and custom made tail section. This is pretty unique on the CX500 builds as most builders tend to cut the rear sections. All in all, we think this is one of the sweetest CX500 Cafe Racer custom we have seen.
Be sure to go check out more of Mr Motorcycle’s builds and Mat’s amazing work.
