What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you here Turbo Motorcycle? It’s usually not a Kawasaki KZ650. Well that is exactly what Magnum Opus Customs has built with their boosted Kawasaki KZ830 Cafe Racer. The thing that makes this build so special is the very rare big bore and turbo kit used on this build.
Starting with a 1978 Kawasaki KZ650, Ezio of Magnum Opus wanted to do something different and more power. What’s better then a turbo kit on a KZ650 to be different. The engine was completely stripped down and a MTC 830cc big bore kit was installed. The upper case needed to be machined to fit the massive 830 cylinder sleeves. To boost the power even more a American Turbo Pak kit was installed. This is the same turbo kit that was used on the Kawasaki Z1R-TC bikes back in the late 70’s.
All of the electronics were also upgraded. A Dyna-S electronic ignition was used in conjunction with a set of Martek coils and full custom wiring harness. Up front he went with a minimalist approach on the control. Handlebars were replaced with a set of clip ons to give it that more aggressive riding style of a cafe racer. OEM gauges were replaced with a set of chrome mini gauges as well as a boost gauge. Stock forks were upgraded with a set of stiffer springs as well as new master cylinders and a drilled brake disc.
To finish the bike off, a custom seat pan and seat for fabricated uses the OEM key to open it up. Tank and tail sections received a custom paint job with pin-stripping and all new Kawasaki badges. All in all, This is one very cool classic turbo custom motorcycle with a simple and clean look. Performance was boosted to a respectable 100whp at 10 psi with the addition of the turbo and big bore setups. Be sure to go check the bike out on Magnum Opus website and it is for sale if you are interested.
