Some motorcycles seem to come back onto the scene after decades of being forgotten. The Honda CX500 is just one of those bikes. A few builders have dared to create a custom CX500, in doing so, they are all the new rage. One of those builders just happens to be Ed Turner who is known for some of the most exquisite custom motorcycles around. One of the latest builds by Ed Turner motorcycles, is their custom CX500 Cafe Racer. When I first laid eyes on the bike, the only way I could tell it was a CX500 was by its distinctive engine.
In planning out and designing this bike, Ed Turner only wanted to use the CX500’s engine and wheels. The result is a truly one off custom CX500. The engine which incorporates a ton of one off parts most notably the incredible custom exhaust systems. The headers, instead of being in a normal downward direction, were fabricated to go up over the engine and under the tail section. As a result, the one off frame was basically built around the engine and exhaust system.
The frame of the bike which was designed around the engine and exhaust, is simple yet stunning. It’s clean bends flow with the rest of the lines on the bike. Up front the suspension was upgraded with a set of triumph triple speed forks which drastically improve the performance. The stock CX500 suspension left much to be desired. For the new forks, Ed designed and machined a custom set of triple clamps. Additionally, a ton of little bits were polished to a brilliant shine including the forks and wheels. To finish the bike off, a one off tank, made from a 4 part mold, was hydro dipped for the graphics and then painted.
