Fred Krugger of Krugger Motorcycles is at it again. Yamaha Motors had approached Fred to build a bike and his bike of choice was the Yamaha SR400. With its classic styling and it’s single cylinder engine one of the best performing 399cc engines around, Fred wanted to to produce a retro styled cafe racer. What he has build is surely a retro design and probably one of the fastest Yamaha SR400 motorcycles on the planet.
To start with, he made some modifications to the stock frame. To be aesthetically pleasing to the eyes, all the factory welds were cleaned up. A custom tail loop was fabricated to create a steep up sweep in the rear. The tail section also houses all the electronics for the machine as well as a set of cool custom made tail lights.
In true Fred fashion, he couldn’t keep the tank stock. It has been narrowed as well as stretched to create a more sleek appearance. A custom tail section was fabricated to flow with the sweep of the tail hoop. To finish it off, a hand crafted seat perfectly ties into the lines of the tank and tail.
Now on to the real goodies of the bike. The single cylinder engine of the SR400 has been completely transformed. First, the fuel injection was ditched and replaced with an S&S 48mm carburetor mounted to a custom hand made intake. Most noteably, is the supercharger that has been added. His pick was the Aisin 300 supercharger. Mounted to a custom aluminum plenum chamber and a cool looking belt setup to help it move the air. Finally, a custom one off stainless exhaust was fabricated to help this beast breathe.
Fred Krugger’s builds leave very little to be desired and this Yamaha SR400 is no exception. With its stunning retro racer styling and supercharged single cylinder engine, it might be on e of the best SR400’s we have seen. Being a 2 time AMD World Championship winner, his builds are are simply outstanding. Be sure to go checkout his website and follow him on social media to see what he comes up with next.
